Victoria Falls is one of the greatest starting points for a self-drive safari in Africa. Within a two-hour radius of the Falls you have access to Hwange National Park — one of Africa's largest and most wildlife-rich reserves — plus easy border crossings into Botswana's Chobe National Park and Zambia's Livingstone area. Add the Zambezi River corridor, Matobo Hills, and the vast Matabeleland plains, and you have enough to fill weeks of independent exploration.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a self-drive safari from Victoria Falls: which vehicle to hire, which routes to take, how to enter national parks, and the practical tips that make the difference between a smooth trip and a stressful one.

Why Self-Drive from Victoria Falls?

Guided safaris are excellent — but self-drive gives you something no guide can: complete freedom. You set the pace. You can spend three hours watching a pride of lions, or leave Hwange at dawn and be back at the Falls for a sundowner cruise. Victoria Falls town has reliable fuel stations, good supermarkets, and a straight, well-maintained A8 highway connecting it to Hwange and beyond.

Good to know

Zimbabwe drives on the left side of the road. A 4x4 is only essential when you enter national park game tracks or unpaved gravel roads.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Economy Sedan
Town & Highway
Nissan Latio, Toyota Corolla. Not suitable for game park tracks.
Standard SUV
Tarmac & Gravel
Toyota Fortuner 2WD. Handles gravel but not Hwange game tracks.
4x4 Vehicle
Safari Essential
Land Cruiser Prado, Fortuner GD6. Required for Hwange and park tracks.
Our recommendation

If your itinerary includes any national park game drives, hire the 4x4. You cannot upgrade at the park gate.
